REFRIGERATOR Breakdowns reasons and How to Prevent Them

A refrigerator is one of the hardest working appliances in your home. It runs 24/7 to keep your food fresh and safe. However, refrigerators don’t last forever.

Understanding the most common causes of refrigerator failures can help you prevent untimely breakdowns and costly repairs.

Condenser Coil Issues

The condenser coils are responsible for releasing the heat absorbed from the inside of the refrigerator. When these coils become dusty or obstructed, the refrigerator has to work harder to expel hot air. This puts strain on the compressor and can cause it to overheat and fail prematurely.

Prevention: Vacuum the condenser coils annually to remove dirt and dust buildup.

ensure there is proper airflow around the coils by keeping the area clear.

Dirty Condenser Fan

The condenser fan circulates air over the condenser coils to whisk away heat. When this fan fails or becomes clogged with dirt and debris, the condenser can’t efficiently release heat.

Prevention: Check and clean the condenser fan annually if accessible. Replace the fan if it’s not operating properly.

By taking simple preventative steps like these, you can dramatically extend the life of your refrigerator’s compressor and avoid breakdowns. Of course, if your refrigerator does require repairs, it’s best to call in a professional appliance repair technician right away.

Gasket Failures

The gaskets or seals around refrigerator doors are prone to cracking and damage over time from frequent opening and closing. When the gaskets fail to seal properly, it causes the compressor to run constantly to maintain cool temperatures as cold air escapes. This shortens the compressor’s lifespan.

Prevention: Inspect and clean gaskets regularly. Apply a gasket sealant product annually to add flexibility and seal tiny cracks. Replace gaskets at the first sign of stickiness or failure to close tightly.

Overloading the Refrigerator

Stuffing too many items into the refrigerator, especially the freezer compartment, blocks proper airflow. This makes the compressor work overtime and increases strain.

Prevention: Allow space between items in the refrigerator and freezer for proper air circulation. Don’t pack refrigerator sections too tightly.
